Obedience through Jesus-The Rich Young Man

The children will learn that-:

  • Jesus shows us what true obedience is
  • Jesus is the one who enables us to obey

Memory Verse:

Mark 10:27 (NIV)

Introduction

Who wants to be a Millionaire?

  • There are so many different types of shows on television. There are comedies, police shows, soap operas, talk shows, reality shows, quiz
shows, and many more. What kind of shows do you like to watch? What is your favourite TV show? One of my favourites is “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”
  • Who wants to be a millionaire? Probably most of us would answer yes to that question. A famous person once said, “I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor. Believe me, rich is better.” I wonder what Jesus would have to say about that?

Bible Story

  • A young man ran up to Christ, fell on His knees and asked Him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
  • Jesus told him, “You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honour your father and mother.’”
  • The young man told Jesus that He had kept all these commands since he was a boy.
  • Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack, “he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
  • When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
  •  Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.”
  • When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”
  • Jesus said to them, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
  • The young man was obedient to God, but not in all things in his life. Are you obedient to God in every area of your life?
  • God gave us commandments to show us our sinfulness and our inability to accomplish them. But He was merciful, He also gave us Christ who fulfilled all the requirements of the law. What is impossible with man is possible with God.
  • Like the rich young man, we sometimes have difficulty obeying God or our parents, but we should go back to God who helps us obey all commandments.
  • It was not because he was rich that the young man could not enter the
Kingdom. It was because his love for money was greater than his love for God. If anyone wants to enter the Kingdom of God, he must give God first place in their life and obey him.
  • Who wants to be a millionaire? Maybe that isn’t so important after all.
