Bible Story Reference:

John 10:17,18, John 19:28-30, 1John 3:16-18

Memory Verse:

1 John 3: 16 or 18

16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3: 16 or 18

Opening

Ask the children what is the best gift they have ever received. Whether from a family member or from a friend. How did it make them feel? Would they ever consider giving that favorite thing to someone else for it to be theirs?

Bible story

  • God cares about us, and because of our sin we could not get close to him even though He wanted us to know Him. So God sent His Son from heaven down to earth to come and show us the way to know God.

  • The only way we could get to know God is if God’s Son Jesus was to die on our behalf, then we would have a chance to be God’s friends. Jesus’
    • death made a way for us to have that close relationship with God. So now we only have to believe and we have a relationship with God.

    • This simple way of knowing God was given to us for free. We did not do anything good to earn it. God granted it to us for free.

    • But Jesus was God’s most special possession, his most favorite, most precious. Though it hurt God to give up that which meant the most to Him, He gave us His only Son to be our Savior. God has shown us what radical generosity really is by sending His Son to earth for our sakes.

    • Jesus then died on the cross on our behalf so now we get to be God’s friends if we accept God’s free gift of Salvation. Jesus also gave to us freely by giving His life up for us, dying for us, that by our believing we may get to know God.

    • When Jesus was on the cross His stretched out arms show how much He loves us. Before He died, He said it was finished. Everything that needed to be done to have our friendship with God back was completed. Now through Jesus we are friends with God.

    • Now we get to have a relationship with God. Do you want to be God’s friend?

    • Lead the ones who aren’t saved to Christ
